In England writing for the new album.

Hello everyone.

I have been in England now for a couple of weeks writing for my new album and I am excited about how the new songs are sounding. I also went to a screening of the new Borrowers film last night, it was nice to hear my version of Merry little christmas over the opening credits of the film. I was hoping to meet Stephen Fry but he wasn´t there. ( I was going to ask him to take me with him next time he goes to have tea with the queen, he seems like someone who would get invited.)

Doing some writing tomorrow for pop stars I don´t know, I also did that in Norway the other week. It is fun to sometimes write for other singer.

Hope you have started to feel a bit christmasy like I have.

The first song you get to hear from my third album is called Pop Song. I wrote it with Nik Kershaw who has red squirrels in his garden. Now I want squirrels in my garden ( don´t think it is possible here in Iceland so I will settle for some chickens).

I have been busy writing new songs lately. Very excited about the new album now, and look forward to start adding some of the brand new songs to the live show. The one I recorded yesterday is very sad, but somehow sad in a nice way Then when I need to give my brain a rest from music stuff I go and work in the garden. I am growing potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and beetroot this year. Also planted some pretty summer flowers outside of my house. Yes believe it or not it has stopped snowing , finally, ( and there are no volcanos going off at the moment ). And I celebrated this by planting pink flowers !

First day of summer !

Two days ago we celebrated the first day of summer here in Iceland. Yesterday it snowed again. Maybe we should rethink having that celebration in april. Most Icelandic people have memories of being snowed on in a first of summer parade at least once or twice.

I am going over to America next week to play some gigs and my first stop is Los Angeles, I am guessing the weather there is a bit nicer than here at this time of year. Maybe I will just have my own little first day of summer parade when I get there. And If you feel like joining me I should be easy to spot ( I will be the one boiling to death in my woolly jumper ). Yes I should probably find some summery clothes before I leave. Spring has started for the rest of the world.

But before I leave I am going to eat a mountain of chocolate and then play a online gig in from my house on easter monday. Hope you will join me, I promise to play music that goes well with easter egg leftovers.

And the laziest blogger of 2011 award goes to...... me. So many exciting things have happened and I should have blogged about it all. But when I am not working on the music I tend to be in my wellies somewhere in the garden trying to put down some vegetable seeds, but then it keeps snowing again so if any of the ones I put down this weekend end up on the dinner table it will be a miracle.

But the plan was to tell you about exciting music related things, not geeky farm stuff, ( I somehow always end up talking about that instead. ) I went to Sweden last month where I met up with brilliant songwriters from many different countries, we wrote some very good songs for different artists and it was fun writing for other people and to write in different musical styles than what I normally do. When I came back from Sweden I had some horrible swedish flu and sounded like Darth Wader (with an Icelandic accent )for about 2 weeks. But I am better now and back working on the new album.

At the end of april I am going to America, I haven´t played there for a few years so it is about time I go and eat some of their pancakes. I will be playing shows in L.A. , New York, and Boston and I hope to see some of my online friends and followers at the US shows.

My neighbors who live two farms away from us got a chicken house today. They are going to paint it and fill it with chickens in the summer. I think I may have chicken envy.

This was waiting for me when I came outside. The good news is that Mosi has brilliant taste in shoes. The bad news is that I will have to buy a new pair of red shoes because there are now lots of teeth marks in these.

We have had a lot of snow over the last few days. I love it, this is what winter should look like. My cat Moli isn´t so sure about all this white stuff. These pictures will show you why ......

Really ? You people expect me to go out in that weather ??????

But she kept screaming at the door so I opened it to let her check out the snow.

She explored it for a few minutes but then came in and could hardly walk because of all the snowballs that were stuck to her fur.

I tried to dry her off with a towel but the snow was stuck, so I ended up leaving her by the radiator so the snow could melt off.

We keep finding tiny puddles on the floor where Moli´s snow balls are melting.

I have found out that rugby players in general are a bit bigger than me. Last week I played a set before a match between Harlequins and Bath. It was a totally new experience as I have never even seen a rugby game before.

Everyone was really friendly, I had lovely food and they even gave me a Harlequins shirt , they were kind enough to look for the smallest one possible and I still wore it as a dress. Nothing like chillin´with rugby players to make you feel tall.

Oh and I learned a new term. Cauliflower ear = is when you have hurt your ear many times badly and it starts to look a bit plus/minus.

Last but not least I want to say a big thank you to Julian from Harlequins that looked after us while we were there. We had a great day.

A new family member.

I didn´t plan to get a dog, but now I have one. Not sure if I chose him or he chose me.... I guess we kind of just chose each other. His name is Mosi and he was born on the farm across the road from us. The first time I saw him he looked like this

So of course after cuddling him that day I had to visit him again. I started taking him and his brother Skuggi for little walks up the road and feeding them some dog biscuits ......still not planning to get a dog.

Then one day all the puppies had gone to their new homes apart from Mosi. I found this very strange since Mosi had always been my favorite out of all the puppies. So I walked over the road and asked Jón bóndi ( John the farmer ) why Mosi had not found a new home like the other puppies. He then told me that it had been decided long ago that Mosi was coming to live with me.

Mosi is 5 months old now and a very happy puppy. I am so glad that Jón bóndi decided Mosi was my dog, because I can´t imagine him living with anyone else. He has grown a lot in the past 4 months, and if he keeps going at this rate he will end up looking like a polar bear.

Abroad it probably doesn´t count as end of summer yet, but here in Iceland we are already wearing winter clothes. I am already wearing mittens so my summer is over. It has been a great summer though. I grew lots of vegetables, watched my puppy Mosi grow freakishly fast ( he will end up being the size of a polar bear if he keeps growing at this rate ), painted my windows, walked up mountains, sang for people and wrote some songs and last but not least.... learned to knit. Knitted a blanket for my cat Moli. It is not a very nice looking blanked but lets just say it´s the thought that counts.

Autumn is a good time for picking blueberries and there are a lot of blueberries growing in the mountain next to our house. So there will definitely some blueberry pancakes on the menu this week.

Hayling in Afghanistan.

A few years ago I co wrote a song with a band called FC Kahuna. The song is called Hayling and it is still a song I am very proud of. Since writing the song I have occasionally heard from people telling me how the song has been a part of their life which is always lovely to read about.
Last week I received a message that was very touching, and different from any other I have gotten in the past. It was a thank you from an english writer who just completed a book about the war, and spent a year in Afghanistan.

"I hope this reaches you. It's really just a thank you for you wonderful voice, which on Hayling kept me alive during long months in Afghanistan. That, and ducking at the right time.. I am an English writer who has just completed a book about the war there and spent about about a year in total embedded with different armies while researching. I wish I had a krona for every time I played that track, I'd probably be able to afford a Carribean cruise now "

He talks about playing the song in helicopters, bunk beds, in deserts and on mountains. Reading his descriptions felt more like watching a scene from a film, rather than someone talking about their own experiences. Here he talks about a memorable moment where he listened to Hayling.

" On one occasion as I and a platoon of US troops were surrounded on a hilltop by the border with Pakistan, took a brutal barrage of fire and then waited the whole night for the dawn, when we fully expected to be stormed by hundreds of Taliban and slaughtered "

I find it very touching that my song and voice gave someone comfort in a situation like that. Living in my little house here in Iceland this situation couldn´t be further from my reality.

Moli, rescue mission.

Some of you might think this is an over dramatic title, but let me tell you this was dramatic alright. It started with me Alisdair and my little nephew Júlían working in the garden. We were making the soil ready so we can put some vegetable seeds down.

My little cat Moli was helping us in her own special way, mostly by crawling into the bag of weeds we were about to throw away. Then our friendly neighbourhood dog Skotta came over.

Skotta normally comes over to say hi when we are working in the garden and normally her and Moli get on fine, but this time Moli was beeing over confident and went in for a little cuddle. Skotta was not feeling the love and gave Moli a proper scare. This resulted in Moli climbing very high up a tree. I took Skotta home and was hoping that Moli would be back down when I returned, but NO. Moli was still in exactly the same place meowing like there was no tomorrow. So there was only one thing to do......

But when I got all the way up there, looking too cool for school let me add in my washing up cloves and snow trousers ( it is a killer combo in the garden ) Moli was too scared to let go, just kept meowing and hanging on for dear life ( even though she apparently has 9 ), so it was impossible to reach her. It didn´t help that all this was happening to the soundtrack of Julian crying " lets just call fireman Sam "
I finally managed to get a good enough hold of Moli while my sister Telma who at this point had recently arrived cried with laughter whilst taking pictures of the rescue mission on her phone. I managed to hand Moli to Alisdair and only broke a couple of branches on the way down. I only just moved to the country side and I think it is safe to say that I am already keeping the neighbors entertained.

Moli is fine, had some food felt sorry for herself for about 2 minutes and then ran back out into the daylight that we are so lucky to have late in the evenings here during summer or spring.

Action man video, volcano and a monster bee !

VOLCANO- Pretty important stuff and lots of angry people in airports all over the world . And strangely I still haven´t seen any ash from the volcano close to where I live because the wind has blown it straight away over to far away counties. I really feel for the farmers that live under Eyjafjallajökull, their land now looks like somebody pored concrete over all the grass. And the little lambs look a bit scared all covered in ash. I want to help so the options are either to go there with a shovel and remove some ash, or go and do a little gig there to cheer everyone up. I am better at singing then carrying heavy stuff so I might go for the later option.

MONSTER BEE - Don´t send in your little cat to scare away a monster bee, I tried it and now Moli walks funny after being stung in her front paw. It was very scary, this bee was a proper beast I tell you.

HOUSE COLOUR - want to paint my house and am looking for the perfect color, any ideas ????

GROWING STUFF - I want to grow vegetables in my garden this summer ( nobody had lived in the house for years before we bought it so our land looks like a jungle ). But when I have murdered the weeds with some scary tools I will grow a carrot or two. I will keep you updated about my vegetable farm.

Meet Moli !

I promised some of my readers to show a picture of my kitten. Then I forgot because I am still unpacking boxes, but thankfully remembered a few minutes ago that I still hadn´t posted the picture. So the pic above is me and Moli posing in the kitchen just now. Just in case you are thinking that Moli looks more like a lion than a kitten I would like to remind you that I am tiny so kitten looks bigger.
Have been told all kinds of stuff about kittens like the " fact " that they don´t like water. Well someone please tell Moli that, she jumps in the shower any chance she gets. ( Yes I said she, Moli is a girl kitten with a boy name. I found out she was a girl after she had been Moli for a couple of days, and by then it just really suited her.)

Limited edition of Synchronised Swimmers.

My new album Synchronised Swimmers was released here in Iceland last October. The plan is to release it abroad in the spring. But I have been getting messages from foreign friends who don´t think it is fair that they have to wait so long.
So I have made a very very limited edition of the album that can be ordered by clicking on the little red and blue shop on my website.
The limited edition CD´s are all numbered by Alisdair and signed by me. See photographic evidence here above. ( Special thanks to my lovely manager Kerry for lending us her kitchen table and making s tea and toast ).

I haven´t written a blog for way to long. But I have a good excuse. I just moved into my new house. And it is a bit in the country side under the mountains so it took a while to get the internet sorted.
When I moved in I had a bit of a check list of things I needed to get to make it homely.

1. Pink fridge
2. Fluffy kitten
3. Wholly socks ( until I can afford new floor )
4. Big chandelier
5. Lots of tea bags and chocolate ( for long long talks with girlies.
6. Snow in the garden

My boyfriend pointed out that maybe I should have put things like

4. A bin
you see where I am going with this

A quick Hello from Germany !

Hello everyone.

Thought I would use the few minutes I have until going on stage here in Munich to write a few lines about what has been going on. Me and Alisdair are on a acoustic tour in Switzerland and Germany at the moment. Tonight is the first German date, but Switzerland has been wonderful. We played in St Gallen, Chur and two gigs in Zurich. And are already looking forward to going back to Switzerland with the whole band next year.

The picture is of me posing with a little people sandwich. It was waiting for me in the dressing room in St Gallen.

Will try to post more pics tomorrow or when I next have internet.

Album being released in Iceland next week !

It is all very exciting at the moment, my new album Synchronised swimmers will be released in Iceland on monday and I am taking my band over there on tuesday. We will be playing Iceland Airwaves Festival on thursday and release gigs for the album both in Reykjavik and in Akureyri.
I think my dad is already planning how to scare the band with some traditional Icelandic food. Offering rotten shark is always a classic, because just the smell can make people cry, I will try to catch Sarah's face on camera if she actually tires it. ( I don't eat it, it os horrible, but won't be telling the foreign people that until afterwards, it is just too entertaining to watch ).

It has been snowing in Iceland last week, and I really hope it will be covered in snow when the band is there, Iceland looks so much more magical under a blanket of snow.

I am writing this from the studio in Iceland where just finished mixing my second album with Mr Phill Brown, he is one rock..n roll grandpa. I have too many songs at the moment so over the next few days I will be choosing what songs will make it all the way to the album. It will be released here in Iceland in October but not until early 2010 in Europe.
Have also finished all the sewing for the artwork so now it just needs to be put together by Martin.

Mixing the new album.

I have been too busy to write a blog for the last couple of weeks, we have been putting the finishing touches on the new album to have everything ready for mixing this week. We started the mixing yesterday at a studio in Iceland, and knowing my luck the computer in the SSL died right before my session! Not ideal when you have flown in 3 people to work with you. So we spent yesterday trying to work around it while a team of studio engineers tried everything possible to fix it. Just before we left last night
this engineer that kooks like he could hack into banks or the white house shows up, and sadly not even he could wake up the computer. So this morning he left for England to bring back a new computer. So hopefully tomorrow it will be working like normal. So until then we will be doing some old school mixing using human faders.

Flatey, puffins and Magnus the dancer.

Flatey is a tiny island and is a part of Iceland. It has 20 or thirty cute old houses, and walking around the island feels like going back in time ( I know this because I do a lot of time travel ). Me and Alisdair played a little acoustic gig in the restaurant/hotel/play school ...... well it´s the house were stuff happens. Lots of people came to the gig, actually I didn´t realise there were that many people on the island, so we were very happy with the turnout. One of my favorite moments of the evening was when a little boy named Magnus started doing a very enthusiastic dance to my song Kongulo, we are talking moonwalking and everything. He came to see us afterwards and posed for a picture, and I promised I would post a picture of us with Magnus the tiny dance master.
Before I end this I have to say Puffins are brilliant, wanted to take one home they are so cute. But when I went to the local restaurant for dinner they were serving puffin and potatoes, that´s almost like eating a penguin, make it stop.
I DID NOT EAT MY LITTLE PUFFIN FRIENDS!!!!!!

Only a few days until I go to Iceland !

I have finally booked a ticket to go home to Iceland. I am playing an acoustic gig there with an Icelandic rock star called Bubbi, we are quite different artists so it should be interesting. He has written some great songs in his career and I am trying to pick one to add to my set. I was struggling to find a flight to Iceland for a reasonable price, because it is......... a) the middle of the tourist season, b) short notice ,c ) not the best time to pay for things in Icelandic krona's. So it wasn't looking great. I did hope that I would find the end of the rainbow where they keep all the gold, but that sadly hasn't happened yet. But I spoke to a very nice lady at Icelandair UK and she gave me a special banjo player discount ( it was looking more and more likely I would have to go on my own and I promise you, no one needs to hear my banjo solo's ).

So I want to say thank you to www.icelandair.co.uk for sorting out Mr Banjoman's flight.

Me and Alisdair played a lovely venue in Glasgow called Brel. It was kind of like playing in a green house, but in a greenhouse full of people. They looked after us really well gave us nice food and were so lovely. But I can't mention Glasgow without mentioning Angela. I first met her when I played in Glasgow almost 2 years ago, then she made me a cat in a ski jumper on ski's. This time she made me a pink hippo in a leotard and tutu. She told be that she was going to make me a horse but the head got so fat that she turned it into a hippo. I don't know where the connection comes from this time as I don't have songs about a hippo's or horses, but maybe I should write one called Hippos and horses.

I had a barn dance for my birthday !

My dad emptied his work garage of trucks and diggers, my brother and his mates somehow borrowed a lot of hey bales from a farm somewhere.
Me, mum Telma (my sister ) and Alisdair were in charge of decorations, cowboy hats, music, marshmallows and many many hamburgers for the barbeque.
Then I found a line dancing teacher willing to show up in full cowboy gear, and told all my friends and family that they had to take the theme seriously and dress up..... and they did, it was lovely.

Kónguló !

The first single of my second album will be released on the 1st of June in Iceland and on the 21st of June for the rest of the world. It is called Kónguló ( Icelandic word for spider) and is written about the French man called the human spider, you know the one who climbs really high buildings without any safety equipment or anything. Chocolate overdose !

I haven´t written a blog for too long now. But there is a good explanation for this. It is hard to write a blog when you are in a chocolate coma. Easter does that to you, and my challenge was big this year, I had Icelandic and English easter eggs to finish. But easter is over now so it is no longer acceptable to have chocolate for breakfast. (Not that it has stopped me in the past.)
New album getting closer and closer to being ready every day, and I am really enjoying playing the new songs in my live set.
If you want a little preview of some of the new songs there are some little clips on youtube that people have recorded at recent gigs. ( But I would recommend you just show up to a gig yourself if possible. )

Oh and I also found out that barbecuing in glittery pink heels shorts and a winter jacket is a pretty good look, you should try it next time you make some burgers.

London gig !

I played a " comeback " gig in London on wednesday. Sounds a bit funny calling it a comeback when I am only on my second and have not even been away for a year ( and the reason why I haven´t been playing is because I was writing the next album ). But somebody called it a comeback, so a comeback it is. Anyway, it probably makes me sound all mature and stuff.

Gig was great full of people who were excited to hear the new songs, so we played them half new stuff half old favorites. One woman was only excited about hearing Fucked up mind or Hometown hero and passionately tried to convince everyone they needed to be played, but the rest of the audience wanted to hear Diamonds on my belly so she was out numbered. I plan to play these songs for her at a future gig, don´t like seeing people upset.

Bertrand took some lovely polaroid style snaps at the gig, and after seeing them I might consider actually putting some sort of hooks on the Hafdis sign. The whole white messy tape on the wall looks a bit plus minus. Pretty happy about the sawing though.

A strange english man wanted me to sign is bum cheek !

It´s true, I said no, not unless you give me a very long pen, not going close to your behind mister. Someone found a longish pen and I signed his lower back/ bum cheek. Maybe that is a tradition is Portsmouth, who knows, and who am I to break the rules. When in Rome.....

Apart from bum signing, Portsmouth gig was lovely, first gig with the full band playing songs from the new album so we picked a very cosy venue, The Cellars in Eastney. Everybody very friendly there, and barman gave me a Rachel crisps, we liked that.

Rachel was playing with us for the first time, so thanks darling.... she is a proper english rose like Sarah, soon I will have an army of english roses. Steve is not an english rose though, he is more chips and beans kind of man, still very english. And Alisdair Mr banjo man probably wouldn´t think it was cool if I called him an english rose either.

Someone wrote a blog about The Cellars gig so instead of me telling you more about it, I will steal one of the pictures and then put a link to the blog. ( Does it count as stealing if I am borrowing a picture of me ? )

Saw me first very english pantomime.

Hello everyone.

I went to Kings cliffe village hall to watch my very first pantomime this weekend. It was wonderfully homemade and apparently had all the proper characters in it, ( for those who don´t know, there needs to be an older man dressed as a woman, and a girl playing a boy, don´t ask me .... ). The boy played by a girl always gets the pretty girl in the end, and the woman played by a man tells rude jokes and touches her/his boobs a lot.
Then all the people in the audience kept shouting at the actors, and disagreeing with them, you would never see that in an Icelandic theatre so it took a bit of getting used to, but by the end I was screaming " it´s behind you " like a proper english rose.

Car,train,car, plane,train and then a car !

Yes went to Switzerland this weekend. it was a long journey had to take 1 plane, 2 trains and 3 car journeys to get to St Gallen in Switzerland. Me Steve, Alisdair and Anna looked a bit sleepy when we finally got there, but we were soon woken up by Swiss cheese and chocolate. And there was snow, what more could you possibly need ??????

The gig was great and I played 5 songs from the new album, the audience seemed to appreciate the new ones and I am looking forward to rehearsing all the new songs with the whole band, as this gig was just me and the boys.

I made this Snow-rabbit-angel-monster today in my back garden. A man walked past and said it was a lovely snow-fish ( I don´t think he lives close to the sea.)

If there will be more snow I will make more creatures.

I was complaining about the lack of proper snow in England, and today there is more snow here than has been for a long time. So I apologize for saying it doesn´t snow properly here. I suggest the good people of England all put some wholly socks and mittens on and go outside and attempt to set a new record in the amount of people making snow angels in one country at the same time.

So who´s with me ?

Was talking to my sister this morning an Reykjavik is covered in snow. They were getting ready to go sledding, with hot chocolate and everything..... so not fair. So as you have probably guessed I am still in England and there is no sign of snow. Rain is not useful to me, who makes magical rain angels ???? No one.

But to answer yesterdays question about the chickens, only the one who played a mean banjo solo gets to be on the album, the rest will just keep chillin and eating sweat corn.

Grandpa Harold, yes he is very sweet, and has the coolest mustache.

Album recording chickens and many many layers of chlothes!

Hello my friends !

The first thing I did in the new year was filling grandpa Harold´s car with instruments food and chocolate and driving to Scarborough. After having spent my first christmas away from home and really missing the snow, it was very homely to see the frozen glittery ground up there.

We spent a week in a farm house studio recording songs for my second album. The live room is in a barn so it was freeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing all the time and we had to wear so many layers of clothes that I looked like a pink starfish (2 woolly jumpers and a pink puffer jacket tend to have that affect ). But it was also kind of cosy with stars in the sky, a cup of tea in my hand and crazy chickens following me from the live room to the control room. ( I promise, there were chickens following me, I will show you a video clip soon).

The songs are sounding lovely and it is all very exciting, I can´t wait to start playing some new stuff live.
